opportunities for research on tropical marine ecosystems with TRACC a non-profit, non-government organisation (NGO) based in Kuching, Sarawak, East Malaysia. We specialise in biodiversity, ecology and sustainable use of natural ecosystems.

Thank you for your interest.

We are very glad you are finding these pages useful.

Please contact us if you have any further questions BUT remember that we get a lot of e-mail and we spend a lot
of time out of the office working. So please help us to help you by reading the information below first. Thanks.

   HOW YOU CAN BECOME INVOLVED

Join a marine expedition

Please learn more about our research or contact Greenforce, who arrange the logistics of our biodiversity surveys. More information can be found on the Greenforce web pages.

Post-graduate / doctorate fellows, Researchers and Sabbaticals

TRACC is not involved in undergraduate or post-graduate degrees by coursework.

We welcome fellow researchers but we very rarely have funds available for non Malaysians. So if you can fund your living costs and your own research funds we would be happy to help wherever we can with your field of study.

However, if you are not registered or affiliated with any university, an alternative would be to register with Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS - one of the local universities in the state). Contact the postgraduate admissions office for details on admission requirements, course fees etc. More information can be found under UNIMAS' Institute of Biodiversity and Environmental Conservation (IBEC) web page.

There are currently minimal bench fees or research overhead costs. We can normally find you basic lodging at our field station located on Pulau Banggi (off the northeastern coast of Sabah, East Malaysia) and provide shared use of boats, computers etc.  We have a good selection of equipment and it is available for a very reasonable charge.

Research at TRACC is not limited to the fields that we are interested in. If there is a particular area of research that you are interested in, please prepare a brief summary of the research you want to do, attach a brief CV and then contact us. Subjects / areas of study that we try to specialise in are below:

Blastfishing

Spawning aggregations (Groupers, Humphead wrasse etc.)

Cyanide fishing

Turtles

Alternatives to destructive fisheries

Sponges, Ascidians and other sedentary invertebrates

Humphead wrasse

Geographic Information Systems (GIS)

Coastal Zone Management Plans (CZMP)

Environmental education

Environmental sensitivity and reduction of human impact on environments

Work at TRACC

We occasionally have vacancies for research assistants, gap year students etc. However our funding has to give priority to Malaysians so others often have to find their own flights and living costs. A short 12-week alternative is to join one of our biodiversity surveys, which are organised by Greenforce, several times a year.

In addition to our field station on Pulau Banggi which specialises in marine studies, TRACC has an office with a small laboratory based in Kuching, Sarawak. We have minimum facilities for forest work but can facilitate research with the Sarawak Biodiversity Center or other conservation agencies. It is likely that we will be able to provide visiting researchers with deskspace (with shared computer access) and some laboratory facilities.
